Custom Spiral Staircase with a Massive Timber Centre Post

This distinctive spiral staircase demonstrates how natural timber can become the centrepiece of an architectural interior. Built around a substantial solid-wood centre post, the staircase combines precisely shaped wooden steps with an elegant curved metal railing.

The contrast between the natural texture of the timber and the slender wrought-iron railing creates a striking architectural feature. Rather than concealing the structural elements, the design celebrates the beauty and character of solid wood.

Behind this elegant finished staircase lies an interesting manufacturing challenge: producing the complex geometry required to position individual steps around a large natural log.

Robotic Manufacturing of Spiral Staircase Components

Spiral staircases present unique manufacturing challenges. Unlike conventional straight stairs, each step must follow a carefully calculated path around the central timber while maintaining the correct position and orientation.

For this project, the timber components were machined using industrial robotics. Computer-controlled cutting made it possible to produce the complex shapes and connections required for the spiral arrangement.

The photograph shows the large central timber with the staircase components prepared for shipment to Carolina Timberworks, where the project was brought to its finished form.

This is an excellent example of how automated manufacturing can support highly individual architectural designs without sacrificing the natural appearance of solid timber.

From Robotic Manufacturing to Finished Craftsmanship

This project brings together two complementary areas of expertise: precision robotic manufacturing and traditional timber craftsmanship.

Complex machining operations can be completed before delivery, allowing the installation team to focus on assembly, finishing, and the architectural details that give the staircase its distinctive character.

The completed staircase, photographed by Carolina Timberworks, illustrates how carefully manufactured timber components can be combined with custom metalwork to create an exceptional interior feature.

The same robotic manufacturing technology can be applied to many other specialized timber projects, including curved structures, custom joints, architectural features, and non-standard structural components.

Video: Robotic Machining of Elliptical Spiral Log Stairs

The following video provides a closer look at the robotic machining process used to manufacture complex spiral staircase geometry in solid timber.

The elliptical arrangement requires precise control of the cutting tool as it follows the calculated geometry around the log. The machining operations shown were completed in just a few hours, demonstrating the capabilities of robotic timber manufacturing.

Watch the robotic machining of elliptical spiral staircase components from solid logs. The complex cuts were completed in just a few hours.

At the time of this demonstration, the machining process required manually rotating the log between certain cutting operations. An additional rotary axis was being developed to allow the operations to be completed in a single setup.

The anticipated improvement was to reduce machining time for similar components to approximately 20 to 30 minutes. This was a development target rather than a measured production result.
